Traditionally the Oil and Gas Industry insisted that only OPITO approved courses would be accepted. However, due to the severe restrictions this placed in training options, specifically around the African continent, a revised requirement has now been adopted by the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) that has been documented in the latest version of the IOGP Report 590. One of the extracts from this report, which is more fully described in Report 590, Section C - Personnel Qualifications, Experience and Training, follows:

Report 590 Table 11, Page 36 - “ Formal training in Helideck Attendant or Helicopter Landing Officer duties and responsibilities compliant with OPTIO or an equivalent standard "

OPITO Revised Training Standards

OPITO has revised its Training Standards for HLO and HDA qualifications. The document HELIDECK OPERATIONS INITIAL TRAINING (HOIT) Standard rev. 0 Amendment 2 outlines the new standards for HLO and HDA certification.

Flight Safety Africa IOGP clients have indicated that the time frame, and corresponding cost, for this required training is unreasonable. To accommodate this, Flight Safety Africa has condensed the Helideck Operations Initial Training (HOIT) and Helideck Emergency Response Training (HERT) into an affordable 3-day course, without sacrificing any of the essential training modules as required by the OPITO Standards.

Mindful of the fact that OPITO Compliance now requires a greater minimum scope of training for each discipline, Flight Safety Africa has reduced the daily training rate to allow clients to accommodate this new requirement.

The on-board Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) training can be synchronised with Offshore Meteorological Weather Interpretation Training (OMWIT) & if required can be held at the same time as a CAP 437 Helideck Certification Inspection.
